DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers are one of the easiest ways to get vibrant, full-color designs onto almost any fabric. Whether you're customizing a single shirt or running a small batch, this guide walks you through every step so you get a clean, lasting result every time.
What You'll Need
- Your DTF transfer (from our DTF Transfers collection)
- A heat press (clamshell or swing-away both work)
- A blank garment — 100% cotton, polyester, or blends all work great
- A silicone sheet or parchment paper
- A firm, flat pressing surface
Step 1: Pre-Press Your Garment
Before applying the transfer, press your blank garment for 3–5 seconds at 320°F (160°C). This removes moisture and wrinkles, which are the #1 cause of poor adhesion. A flat, dry surface gives the transfer the best chance to bond properly.
Step 2: Position Your Transfer
Place the DTF transfer film-side down on the garment exactly where you want the design. Take your time here — once heat is applied, repositioning isn't possible. Use a ruler or alignment guide if you're doing multiples.
Step 3: Apply Heat and Pressure
Cover the transfer with a silicone sheet or parchment paper to protect both the design and your platen. Press at 320°F (160°C) for 15 seconds with firm, even pressure. Avoid rocking the press — consistent pressure across the whole design is key.
Step 4: Peel the Film
DTF transfers can be peeled hot or cold depending on the film type. When in doubt, let it cool for 10–15 seconds before peeling slowly from one corner. If the design lifts with the film, lay it back down and press for another 5 seconds.
Step 5: Final Press
After peeling, place the parchment paper back over the design and press again for 5–10 seconds. This final press locks in the edges and gives the print a smoother, more finished look.
Care Instructions to Share With Customers
DTF prints are durable, but proper care extends their life significantly:
- Wash inside-out in cold water
- Tumble dry on low or hang dry
- Do not iron directly on the print
- Avoid bleach
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping the pre-press — moisture causes bubbling and poor adhesion
- Too little pressure — DTF needs firm, even pressure to bond fully
- Peeling too fast — rushing the peel can lift edges
- Wrong temperature — too hot scorches the film; too cool and it won't stick
